Modern architecture is often defined by clean forms, a focused material palette, and intentional detail. That clarity does not have to mean a flat or featureless exterior. Large-format stone veneer brings depth, scale, and texture to contemporary spaces while maintaining the disciplined geometry modern design calls for.
Creative Mines Urban King, Urban Rectangle, and Urban Strip were created for that balance. Each profile features a pronounced split-face texture, but its format changes the visual rhythm of a wall. Together, they give architects, builders, and homeowners a way to choose stone that feels substantial and architectural without overwhelming the design.

The size and proportion of a masonry unit affect how a facade is read from a distance and how it feels up close. Larger units create fewer visual interruptions across a wall, allowing the material to feel calm, continuous, and intentional. At the same time, the split-face surface catches light differently throughout the day, creating shadow lines and movement that smooth cladding materials cannot replicate.
This makes large-format stone veneer especially effective on projects with broad exterior walls, strong rooflines, tall entry volumes, and open-plan interiors. It can give a simple elevation more presence without adding unnecessary ornament.
Urban King features an oversized 12" x 24" format that gives facades, fireplace surrounds, and entry walls a strong sense of proportion. The larger unit size works particularly well when a project needs stone to read as a defining architectural material rather than a small decorative accent.

Use Urban King on expansive exterior walls, tall fireplace volumes, commercial entries, or large indoor-outdoor living spaces where the architecture can support its scale.
Urban Rectangle brings the same split-face texture into a more balanced rectangular format. It is a natural fit for contemporary homes and commercial spaces that need a clean, consistent stone pattern while still benefiting from tonal variation and material depth.

The profile works well as a full facade treatment, an entry feature, or a grounding material beneath more refined elements such as glass, wood, steel, or smooth stucco.
Urban Strip uses a 4" x 22" format to introduce a longer horizontal rhythm. Its proportion can visually extend a low, wide elevation or bring clean linear movement to a fireplace, exterior wall, or landscape feature.

For projects where a designer wants the warmth and variation of stone but a more streamlined contemporary expression, Urban Strip offers a strong middle ground between natural texture and modern order.
Urban profiles work best when the scale of the stone supports the scale of the architecture. On a larger home or commercial project, bigger masonry units can make the design feel more cohesive by reducing the number of joints and creating a quieter overall pattern.
They are also useful for material palettes that need contrast. Pair Urban stone with warm wood, blackened steel, expansive glazing, board-formed concrete, or smooth plaster to balance its dimensional surface. The stone adds tactile depth, while the surrounding materials keep the composition crisp and contemporary.
Grout also changes the final look. A tighter, more subtle grout joint allows the stone itself to take visual priority, while a more visible joint can emphasize the geometry and pattern of the installation. Before making a final decision, review samples alongside the planned grout color and, when possible, create a project mock-up with the mason.
Large-format masonry veneer creates a refined finished look, but that result depends on careful preparation and installation. The substrate must be clean, dry, structurally sound, and properly prepared before veneer is installed. Any movement joints required by the wall assembly should continue through to the face of the veneer.
For Urban King, Urban Rectangle, and Urban Strip, Creative Mines specifies polymer-modified veneer mortars that meet ANSI A118.4 or ANSI A118.15 requirements. The bonding mortar should be applied to the wall with a 1/2" x 1/2" notched trowel, while a even coat is fully applied to the entire back surface of each unit. This helps achieve full mortar coverage and a secure bond.
A test panel is also a valuable step before beginning a full installation. It allows the project team to confirm the selected materials, wall preparation, grout approach, and installation method before work extends across the entire facade or feature wall.

For Rectangles, Strips, and Kings, Creative Mines calls for a minimum 1/4" grout joint. Applying grout as a bead before setting the next stone can help control the joint and reduce cleanup. For lighter-colored or large-format stone, applying a breathable sealer before grouting can also make cleanup easier and help minimize staining during installation.
As with any exterior cladding system, local code requirements, wall conditions, weather, and project-specific details should be reviewed with the installer, architect, or engineer. The full Creative Mines Installation Guidelines should be used as the final reference for approved substrates, preparation, mortar requirements, and application details.
Urban King, Urban Rectangle, and Urban Strip give modern projects three distinct ways to work with stone: bold scale, balanced geometry, or refined linearity. Each profile brings the texture and tonal depth of split-face stone to contemporary architecture, while allowing the design team to choose the format that best serves the proportions of the space.
Whether the goal is a statement entry, a fireplace that anchors an interior, or an exterior facade with more material presence, selecting the right profile early helps ensure the installation supports the design from the start.
